Doubletalk
Watching the mess the Office of the President Trainee is making of the auto industry is truly a humbling thing; I never in my wildest dreams thought I'd be so spectacularly accurate in my assessment of this arch-fascist. But what really impresses me about him is his relentless doubletalk. As in,
Jonah Goldberg:
Let me be clear: the United States government has no interest or intention of running GM. What we are interested in is giving GM an opportunity to finally make those much-needed changes that will let them emerge from this crisis a stronger and more competitive company. In other words,
We have no interest or intention of running GM. What we are interested in is giving GM, and the entire auto industry now that I mention it, an opportunity to finally run itself the way we tell it to.Like any good fascist, Obama is very careful to say the exact opposite of what he really means. This has two benefits: it allows his worshippers to hide behind his lies rather than make up excuses of their own, and it gives those of us who aren't afraid to point out that he's a lying fascist the means to instantly and easily decipher his real meaning.
Jonah Goldberg:
GM is now Obama's company. If it closes, it will be on his say-so. But Obama is a politician, not a CEO. So his first concern is to avoid bad political fallout, which means he will prop up the company for as long as it takes, regardless of what makes economic sense. This, in turn, will likely make the company either less economically sound or, it will rebound — but only by getting special breaks other companies won't get. Either way, bad practices will be rewarded and/or good practices will be punished. More firms will see that gaming Washington pays off and the cycle will continue.
Of course, the good news is that being a law professor and community organizer totally prepares you to run huge white elephant multinational corporations.
